Sanjivani: Decode Your Gut's Fiber Signal
Chapter 5 — Teaching It Back
Lakshmana's cousin Anika caught him mid-notebook one evening, curious rather than skeptical at first. "What's all this?" she asked, flipping past columns of foods and reactions with genuine interest, then more pointed questions as she read further. By the third page, curiosity had turned into something closer to a challenge.
"So you're telling me fiber advice doesn't work?"
"No," Lakshmana said, surprising himself with how quickly the answer came. "I'm telling you generic fiber advice doesn't tell you what your fiber advice should be. There's a difference."
Anika wasn't convinced yet. She'd tried her own rounds of dietary advice over the years — different diets, different apps, different promises — with the same pattern of early enthusiasm fading into frustration Lakshmana recognized from his own six months of guessing. If he wanted to actually help her rather than just talk about his own experience, he'd need to teach the method itself, not just describe his results.
Making It Explicit
Sitting with Anika forced Lakshmana to do something he hadn't done before: turn three months of lived experience, guided step by step by Hanuman and Sushena, into something someone else could follow without either of them in the room.
He laid it out, and in doing so, effectively wrote the method down for the first time in his own words:
Step 1 — Establish a baseline. A few stable days, ordinary eating, no changes yet. Just noticing, without judging.
Step 2 — Test one variable at a time. A single food, a controlled day, logged in three simple categories: what was eaten, when, and how the body responded over the following hours.
Step 3 — Watch for false patterns. Before trusting any single result, ask what else changed that day — sleep, stress, an unusual meal the night before. One data point isn't a pattern. A repeated, controlled result is closer to one.
Step 4 — Widen the tracking, not just the food list. Digestion isn't the only signal worth watching. Energy, focus, and mood can carry real information too — tracked plainly, without overclaiming the mechanism behind them.
Step 5 — Expect the map to shift. Stress, travel, illness, and life disruption can temporarily change how the body responds. The skill isn't a finished result. It's the ongoing habit of checking, especially when something in life has changed enough to warrant a re-check.
Anika listened, and by the end, the challenge in her voice had softened into something more like interest. "That's... actually more work than a diet plan."
"It is," Lakshmana admitted. "But a diet plan already failed you a few times, didn't it?"
She didn't answer right away, which was its own kind of answer.
What Teaching Revealed
Later that night, reviewing the conversation in his head, Lakshmana noticed something Sushena had likely intended from the start, though she'd never said it outright. Explaining the method to Anika had forced him to notice the parts he'd absorbed without realizing — the instinct to question a single result, the patience to wait for a repeated pattern before trusting it, the willingness to keep tracking even when a trip or a bad week made the data messy.
He hadn't just followed instructions for three months. He'd built a way of thinking that didn't require Hanuman's kit or Sushena's careful caution standing over his shoulder anymore. He could still use their guidance — welcomed it, even — but he no longer strictly needed it to take the next honest step on his own.
When he mentioned this to Sushena at their next session, she allowed herself something rare: a small, satisfied nod, rather than another careful qualification.
"That," she said, "is the actual goal. Not that you keep coming back to me forever with every question. That you learn to ask your own gut the right questions, and trust yourself enough to sit with the answer, even when it isn't the one you expected."
